How AC Milan’s Wingers Found Space Against Tottenham Stoppers

AC Milan attacked with 3-4-2-1 line up against Tottenham’s 5-4-1 line up.

Tottenham’s right and left stoppers could match with Milan wingers 1 by 1 closely and didn’t let them to be effective with the ball. But also Tottenham’s defense line didn’t take position closer to their own midfield line. So this time, when one winger took position diagonal according to the ball in between midfield and defense lines ( for example, if the ball is in left half-space, right winger’s positioning), Tottenham’s stopper which normally matched with him, couldn’t take position closer to this winger and Milan could make game with their wingers with this way.

To make it clear, we can look at this match position. AC Milan try to make game from left wing. And when left winger Leao closes to midfield to take the ball, Tottenham’s right stopper closes to him immediately.

And after a few seconds later, when Milan’s right winger Brahim Diaz takes the ball free, you can see Tottenham’s left stopper Ben Davies didn’t follow Brahim Diaz and stayed in the defense line.
