Netherlands’ First Goal Against Croatia

In this position, as you can see, Croatia’s defense line prepared for Netherlands’ attack. Croatia’s right winger Pasalic helps his defense. Croatian midfielders were taking position high so because of that Brozovic and Modric couldn’t take position quickly.

When the ball moved to the next Netherlands player, Brozovic closes to the player who is just about to take the ball. Croatia can’t use their numerical advantage effectively in the area. They have numerical advantage with 4 vs 2 but they are unnecessarily intense. Netherlands’ left winger Simon is taking the ball now and midfielder Wieffer is making a run to Brozovic’s behind. Modric can’t shift to cover Wieffer now because he was not close enough to Brozovic. He was meeting Netherlands front but when Netherlands used a long diagonal ball to left wing, he had to shift quickly and because Croatia’s right side couldn’t gain time for Modric, Modric couldn’t change his position at the right time.

So Wieffer takes the ball and goes into the penalty box. In this position, Croatia’s left back Perisic, as you can see, is not careful about offside or his opponent’s positionings. Netherlands’ right winger Malen and offensive midfielder Koopmeiners are all free.
